Letting Temporary Sync Measures Become Permanent
Some of these syncs came into the codebase as temporary measures. They were a quick fix to keep a feature moving when the architecture would not allow it. The team that introduced them intended to come back and clean them up. They never did.
Nothing is so permanent as a temporary government program. Each temporary sync compounds with the next, and the architecture teams originally intended as transitional becomes the only architecture anyone remembers. That extra cost from today's architecture is sync tax.
